August into Fall

“(A Lullaby for Kerry) August into Fall”

You can’t sleep without me near
But I have the same problem, dear.
So we pick a spot as we go to bed.
So we can be together in each other’s head.

Soft waves tap on a raft
Like a child’s heartbeat.
I dream of an August
Where we can meet.
I am ten and as lost
As I am today.
We just cuddle and watch
Cloud dragons at play.

Maple leaves fly by
And slay them all.
You just wished us
Into fall.
Where leaves turn
Sunset orange and apple red.
My favorite playground
Is in your head.

It is cold we cuddle tight
As we drift into the night
Lonely misfits
In our private play
Two dreamers
 Dreaming the world away.

I had just written “Plush Lullaby” last night and thought of how I had helped Kerry fall asleep when we couldn’t be with each other at the end of her life by visualizing a magical place were we could go and feel loved. We did that again and it made me feel loved.
